In my last year of school I never thought I would be going for Umrah let alone any trips. I was focused on graduating and saving the vacations for June.
But when my brother mentioned that he was going with ILinkTours during the winter break and that he would pay for my ticket I jumped at the opportunity. Alhamdulillah we set out for Makkah on December 26th 2016 for a 12 day Umrah trip.
It was not until the wheels of our airplane started rolling down the runway and I sent a farewell broadcast to my close friends that my journey to the house of Allah subhanna wa ta’ala felt real. After a 12 hour flight we landed in Jeddah at 9am. We checking into our hotel shortly after and performed all the rituals of Umrah by Dhur time with ease.
I spent the rest of my trip exploring different parts of Makkah and Madinah and reliving the Seerah of the Prophet salullahu alayhi waSalam. One of the most profound moments for me was when our I Link Tours tour guide, Sh. Jama Hareed, took us to see Mount Thawr, the cave Rasulullah (saw) and Abubakr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) took shelter while fleeing from Quraysh to Madinah.
Sh. Jama reminded us of ayat 40 in Surah Taubah were Allah says,
“If you do not aid the Prophet – Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, “Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.” And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah – that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.”

This was surreal because that ayat was marked in my mushaf and now I had the opportunity to picture the very mountain that sheltered the Prophet (saw) and his closest companion.
People often ask me to describe what it is like to visit Makkah and Madinah. And I often say it’s the difference between worshiping Allah with certainty and worshiping Allah with imagination.
Your religion and faith in Allah takes a whole new level because you now understand what it means to have the Kabah as your daily Qiblah, you trek on the same path that the Prophet (saw) and his companions did, you witness the places where the Qur’an was revealed, you experience the diversity of our Ummah, you realize that thousands of our believers are asking Allah for the same thing as you – His pleasure and forgiveness.
With the grand ceilings of the Haram you recognize your smallness but Allah still honored you to visit His house. Going to Umrah was unexpected for me. I pray that Allah azza wa jal grants me the honour again and that if you are reading this that Allah subhanna wa ta’ala honours you as his guest as well, Ameen.
